FREE SEMINAR The Vitamin D Miracle: Is it for Real? & SLE and arthritis: focus on gluten intolerance DATE: Saturday, June 14, 2008 TIME: 10:00 a.m. – 12 noon. LOCATION: United Way Building 4699 Murphy Canyon Rd. San Diego, CA 92123 Epidemiologist Frank C. Garland, Technical Director, Naval Health Research Center will be speaking on this topic. The Vitamin D Miracle: Is it for Real? • The idea that vitamin D insufficiency plays a role in cancer and chronic adult diseases continues to gain scientific credence as a plausible theory. • It may be that Vitamin D interacts with an unusually large number of our genes, working like a master switch to turn them on or off. • “virtually every cell” in the human body has receptors for vitamin D and that hundreds of different genes may be regulated by it. • Vitamin D plays a role in telling cells when to die, thus helping to prevent uncontrolled proliferation and curbing the growth of new blood vessels that nourish growing tumors. In general it has been concluded that the Vitamin D status of most individuals in North America will need to be greatly improved for substantial reduction in incidence of cancer. Epidemiological studies have shown that higher Vitamin D levels are also associated with lower risk of Type I diabetes in children and of multiple sclerosis. Several studies have found that markers of higher Vitamin D levels are associated with lower incidence of severity of influenza and several other infectious diseases.
